Manhattan International High School Students Mary Mansaray, Farjana Tahmin and Hawa Tall and Bibi spoke at the opening of the 2016 Face to Face Conference at the City College of New York, presented by The New York City Arts in Education Roundtable.
Accompanied by Parent Coordinator Daira Olivero and Teaching Artist Danilo Coleman, they shared their Magic Box PSA (Public Service Announcement), Life as an Immigrant Student, with an audience of over 500 attendees. The students spoke of the ways in which their own experiences had guided the vision of their Public Service Announcement.
Magic Box Executive Director Nelle Stokes presented a workshop on Media Arts and the New Core Standards: Real-World Connections Between Cameras, Classrooms and Curriculum, where she shared valuable information the ways in which media arts standards are a dynamic part of the voluntary National Core Standards and the NYC DOE Blueprints for the Arts. Participants learned how to use the standards to support real-world learning for young people, and gained practical strategies for incorporating media arts instruction within a variety of settings.
